Trump Wants Jeff Sessions To Arrest And Prosecute The Mayor Of Oakland
According to reports, President Donald Trump asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions on Wednesday to prosecute the mayor of Oakland California, a Democrat.
Oakland’s Mayor Libby Schaaf publicly warned people in her city and around the country that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) was planning a raid in the city. ICE executed similar tactics in other cities, rounding up and arresting countless undocumented immigrants.
President Trump did not appreciate the fact that the mayor chose to provide constituents with information, undermining his administration’s ability to arrest, detain and deport more immigrants. Trump said that, as a result of the warning, “They all fled, or most of them fled. The whole operation took a long time to put together.”
The president commented on the planned raid and Mayor Shaaf’s warning at a White House round table meeting. In attendance at the event were political leaders and law enforcement officials from California. Also at the meeting was Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, the current acting head of ICE, Thomas Homan, and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).
The president said, “You talk about obstruction of justice — I would recommend that you look into obstruction of justice for the mayor of Oakland, California, Jeff. She advises thousand people … ‘Get out of here, the law enforcement’s coming.’ And you worked on that long and hard, and you got there and there were very few people there.”
He continued, “Perhaps the Department of Justice can look into that, with respect to the mayor, because it’s a big deal out there, and a lot of people are very angry about what happened.”
