Melania Trump Releases Statement Regarding Her Hospitalization, Calls For ‘Personal Privacy’

First lady Melania Trump underwent kidney surgery at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center on Monday. The first lady’s office said in a statement that Melania Trump, “underwent an embolization procedure to treat a benign kidney condition.”

The statement continued, “The procedure was successful and there were no complications.” The statement also said that “The First Lady looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children everywhere.”

On Tuesday, the first lady’s office made clear that Melania would appreciate privacy during her recovery. Melania’s communications director, Stephanie Grisham, said, “The First Lady is in good spirits, and she is resting. There are HIPAA laws to consider, but she also deserves personal privacy.”

A CNN reporter asked Grisham why Melania would stay in the hospital for as long as a week after a routine procedure. Grisham responded, “I am not going to expand beyond the statement I put out.”

Many observed that President Donald Trump took to Twitter soon after his wife’s procedure, though not to wish her well or acknowledge the operation, but rather to talk about China. President Trump went to visit the first lady for a brief time on Monday. He then tweeted about her recovery, saying:

Melania Trump is a very private person. She prefers a quiet routine with her son, opposed to the spotlight afforded by her position as first lady.

CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta speculated about the first lady’s condition, saying it was “unclear exactly what [Trump] had done, an embolization procedure is typically done for cancer — although it’s very clear in this statement that this was a benign condition.”

He went on saying, “That’s how they’ve framed it. So it doesn’t sound like it’s any type of cancer.” He added, “Sometimes thyroids, or cysts, or something like that can be treated as well.”
