According to NBC News, the Russian lawyer at the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting told the Senate Judiciary Committee that Donald Trump Jr. asked her for evidence that the Clinton Foundation accepted illegal donations.
In a written questionnaire, Kremlin-linked attorney Natalia Veselnitskaya said she did not have that kind of information and had only wanted to speak with Trump Jr. about the Magnitsky Act’s sanctions on Russia. She added that Trump Jr. had misunderstood why they were meeting and seemed to quickly lose interest when she didn’t have any dirt on Hillary Clinton.
“Today, I understand why it took place to begin with and why it ended so quickly with a feeling of mutual disappointment and time wasted,” Veselnitskaya wrote, according to NBC News. “The answer lies in the roguish letters of Mr. Goldstone.”
Rob Goldstone, a British music producer, arranged the meeting between Veselnitskaya on behalf of Emin Algarov and promised Trump Jr. damaging information on then-Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.
From NBC News:
Though some may see her answers as self-serving, Veselnitskaya’s written answers reinforced what has long been understood about the Trump Tower meeting: that Donald Trump Jr. accepted it on the promise of incriminating information about Clinton that he had been told was coming from the Russian government. And he asked Veselnitskaya directly whether she had it, according to her written answers. Jared Kushner and Paul Manafort were also in attendance, as were a Russian lobbyist, a Russian businessman and a translator.
The meeting was also attended by former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
